| Possible Opening of New Border | | | | | | | Possible Opening of New Border Crossing at Playas de Tijuana | | | | | |
| | | | | On June 1st, 2007. There are various proposals being talked about, such as the opening of a new border-crossing gate in the Playas de Tijuana neighborhood, the widening of the Puerta de México crossing, and a possible toll fee to defray expenses. These ideas were presented to the Interior Ministry subsecretary by members of Tijuana’s CCE (Consejo Coordinador Empresarial de Tijuana) business council. | | | | | | | Members of the Hotel Association (Asociación de Hoteleros) came up with the idea of paying their guest’s toll fee. | | | | | | | The problem of the border crossing is stalling Baja California’s competitiveness, which is now well understood by the federal authorities. The federal government is well aware that Baja California must solve this problem to realize its potential growth.
The proposal for a border gate at Playas de Tijuana was brought about by Tijuana’s City Government. The City claims it would not damage the environment. In fact, since it would be a toll crossing, it would pay for its own maintenance and offer a faster crossing. A poll was conducted which concluded that people are willing to pay a toll fee in exchange for a faster border crossing.
| | | | | | | The Interior subsecretary concluded that the proposals would be analyzed by the Federal Government and, in a period of six weeks, another meeting would be scheduled to discuss their findings. | | | | | | | | | | | | |
